A haori (羽織) is a hip- or thigh-length Japanese jacket with an open front, traditionally worn over a kimono. Today the haori, often sold as a kimono cardigan or kimono jacket, is one of the easiest ways to bring Japanese style into an everyday wardrobe.
Haori vs kimono
- Kimono: a full-length robe wrapped left over right and closed with a wide sash (obi).
- Haori: a shorter jacket worn over the kimono. It is never wrapped; it hangs open or is loosely tied with cords called haori-himo.
A short history
The haori became widespread in the Edo period, first among men and later among women. Because the lining was hidden from view, wealthy wearers often had elaborate artwork painted or woven on the inside as a quiet form of luxury.
How to wear a haori today
- Summer: a light printed kimono cardigan over a white tee and shorts.
- Autumn: a heavier or reversible haori jacket as an overshirt with jeans.
- Full Japanese look: pair a haori with hakama pants and tabi socks.
- Keep it balanced: a bold print works best with plain basics underneath.
